12 Dec 2014. #6. It does sound like a gear linkage issue. A few years ago a had a Vauxhall Corsa which the gear linkage went on. There was a ball & socket connection on it which the socket got worn on allowing lots of loose play. If you can see your gear linkage give it a move by hand and see if you feel any play anywhere.

1 post · Joined 2017. #1 · Aug 29, 2017. Hi everyone. My 2001 mk4 1.6 has been having an erratic idle. This does not occur on a cold start. I have cleaned the throttle body and changed the map sensor. Can anyone suggest what is causing this?
Golf 1.6 16v Performance probs. My Golf 2001 1.6 16v has suffered from an annoying problem since new. When started from cold it's fine and performs well, but when started from hot the engine is incredibly sluggish. At the same time the throttle sensitivity changes making pulling away more tricky and the engine note also becomes more boomy.
Let's not be pedantic about this, the 1.4 and 1.6 16v (you tell us neither the year, engine size or engine code, I am working on clairvoyancy but I have not perfected it yet) has an electronic throttle so it has an EPC (Electronic Performance Control) light and an engine malfunction light often called an MIL, sometimes an emissions light or engine light, whatever!, to coin a modern phrase.
